Fennville Varsity Girls Basketball

The Fennville varsity girls basketball team is much improved from last season. This is a very young team, they start 3 juniors and 2 sophomores. There is not a single senior on this team. The Blackhawks have started the season off 3-5 already matching their win total from last year.

There are many people complaining about when in the season the girls play basketball. Some people want the season to be played the same time as the boys in the winter so the girls have the same opportunity as boys. There was a court case about this and we are still awaiting on the outcome.

The Blackhawks had a tough night against there rival the Saugatuck Indians. At halftime the score was tied 10-10. Starting the second half the Indians came out on fire upping their advantage to six points. The Blackhawks could never recover and they lost this heartbreaker by 14.

It was tough for the girls basketball team on saturday when they played against Lake Michigan Catholic. The blackhawks never got it started and ended up losing by 11 points.

The Fennville Blackhawks took a long trip to Marcellus on Tuesday night. They knew it would be a big challenge for them against a very good team that is ranked 9th in the state. The Hawks fell to the Wildcats by 22 points, Hannah McFarland led the team with 16 points.

Thursday night the Gobles Tigers came into town and everyone expected a good game. Early, the Tigers were up 8-0 and we were struggling. Before halftime Alyssa Alfaro made two three-pointers and made the gap closer, so the score was 20-15 at the intermission. The hawks came out firing in the second half and before anyone knew they were up by 14 points. We won the game 49-46 and Gobles was one of the top teams in the Conference.

On Tuesday night the Fennville girls basketball team played the Cardinals from Bloomingdale. This game was never very close and in the end we won by 16 and we were led by Amber VanWieren who had 20 points.

On Thursday the Blackhawks got a chance at revenge against the Saugatuck Indians.The Hawks were on fire the whole game and for the first time in six years the Blackhawks beat the Indians in girls basketball. Amber VanWieren led the hawks with an insane 29 points.

On Tuesday night the Blackhawks faced the Bangor Vikings who beat us earlier in the season. Amber VanWieren led the Hawks in points with 14 but it was a complete team effort in their road to victory.

On Thursday the Hawks played the Martin Clippers, a team they lost to earlier in the season. Fennville was down by 4 points at the end of the game but they had to foul the Clippers and they lost this one by 8 points. Amber VanWieren led the team in scoring with 19 points. The Hawks are now tied for third place in the SAC.

On Monday night the Blackhawks went to Lawrence to battle the Tigers. This was their last regular season game of the year besides the crossover. Amber Vanwieren led the hawks to a 3 point victory as she scored a team high 19 points. This sets up a crossover matchup of Fennville vs. Lawton.

In the Blackhawks crossover match-up they played the Lawton Blue Devils. They were playing for 5th place in the SAC. The Blue Devils started out strong and got out to a 20 point lead. However Coach K gave an inspiring halftime speech and the Hawks responded. Fennville cut the lead down to 8 points but they never could get any closer, they lost this one by15. Amber Vanwieren led the hawks in points with 17.
