| First impressions: I guess when I first came here I had a confused impression. I landed in Chicago. I just saw the damaged streets, when I was on my way to the host family from the airport. |

Fennville High School: I like the way the students are a lot more out-going than I was used to in my home country. My first day was interesting, I met a lot of new people, but I had big trouble with my locker. That bothered me. |
Differences:
|
During school there are some differences too. In Germany you are with the same students the whole day. There are usually 20-30 people in a class, but you can only have classes with people in the same grade. And your schedule is with these people. |
|
The food for me was pretty different. I new it would not be the same as in Germany, but the food in my home country are usually more fresh. With more vegetable and fruit. |
Another big difference is how to make the food. In Germany it is normally the parents that make the food. We don't use the microwave as lot. |
|
The locker was new for me. I have never had something like that. Back in Germany, we have the same classroom all day, so it's the teacher that is moving a round. Because of this we just carry our backpack with us, and leave it in the classroom till we go home. |
|
The last big difference is the weather. It's normally a lot warmer during the winter in Germany, and we don't get as much snow, except of in the mountains. |
Holidays and Traditions
|
We have 3 weeks off of school around Christmas. Christmas is celebrated on 24th of December in Germany. It is celebrated when the family some together, exchange presents and eat. After that we go to church. The school is closed for 3 weeks. The Christmas tree was actually 'created' in Germany. |
Easter we celebrate as well as here. It's actually a tradition from Germany, also the sugar and chocolate eggs. The schools are closed for 2 weeks. It's mostly the same way of celebrating as Christmas except of the Christmas tree and ornaments. It's not celebrated as much. |
Father's day: It almost speaks for itselves, this is the day of the fathers. But the tradition has become more comment for themselves, to just celebrate it with their male friends. |
